These inspirational feather lights are designed by Heike Buchfelder, who sources her renewable materials and creates her products in an environmentally responsible way.
Every lamp is entirely hand-crafted from 2,000 to 4,000 goose or rooster feathers.
The translucent quills pierce the shade in a dense pattern, creating a homogeneous surface. Both sides remain visible; the elegance and natural softness of the feathers themselves as well as the spiky, horn-like quills. The light diffused is mesmeric.
The designer writes: “All pieces are completely hand-created. This includes all parts such as the framework, sewing cotton chintz to the frame, sorting the feathers and putting them onto the fabric. By their nature, feathers are dirt-resistant. They have a smooth surface, and any dust that gathers can be gently brushed from the feathers by hand. Due to their horn-like material, feathers are very durable. Under the right conditions, they can last for centuries, as shown by the traditional feather ornaments made by the natives of North and South America, which can still be admired in museums today”. The feathers themselves come from birds that are used in the food industry (so the feathers are by-products rather than taken from birds bred specifically just for the product).
As a natural product, the feathers may change colour slightly over time. They should not be exposed to direct sunlight or temperatures over 65°/ 70°C. The lamps should be hung or stood in dry rooms with plenty of space around them.
The feathers are certified to have been cleaned in accordance with veterinary standards.
